On the way to a climate-neutral factory

The amended Federal Climate Protection Act (KSG) raises Germany's greenhouse gas reduction target for 2030 to minus 65 per cent as compared to 1990. So far, a reduction target of minus 55 percent applied. By 2040, greenhouse gases must be reduced by 88 percent, and climate neutrality is a binding target for 2045.

Environmental protection has been always taken centre stage at AFRISO. That is why our decision in 2022 to create a transformation concept came completely naturally. The goal: climate-neutral production at the Güglingen and Amorbach sites by 2033. The specific roadmap for this was drawn up in cooperation with the VEA initiative "Klimafreundlicher Mittelstand" ("Climate-friendly SMEs").

Climate neutrality 2033

The transformation concept was based on a comprehensive GHG inventory for 2021, prepared according to the GHG Protocol. AFRISO identified the main sources of emissions and defined appropriate measures on this basis:

  • Conversion to 100 % green electricity
  • Optimisation of heating systems and compressed air systems
  • Expansion of photovoltaic systems
  • Introduction of climate-friendly mobility

Initial measures were already completed in 2024:

  • Regular energy audits as per DIN EN 16247 at intervals of four years
  • Conversion to LED lighting
  • Installation and commissioning of a heat recovery system for the plastic injection moulding shop
  • Expansion of the production machinery to include particularly energy-efficient electric plastic injection moulding machines (approx. 50% energy savings)
  • Expansion and renewal of the materials handling technology
  • Expansion of the photovoltaic system at the Amorbach plant (+181 kWp) and at the Güglingen plant (+162 kWp)
  • Transformation of the vehicle fleet: replacement of 10 fossil-fuelled cars with electric cars
  • Installation of charging facilities for cars

Further milestone in 2026

The end of 2026 will see another milestone with emissions reduced by 44.3% in the Amorbach plant and 68.5% in the Güglingen plant. We will achieve this primarily with technical innovations for the production machinery and the purchase of green electricity. AFRISO aims to fully replace fossil fuels at all sites, introduce climate-friendly mobility, and satisfy the entire electricity requirements with renewable energies by 2033. The transformation concept is an integral part of our corporate structure: the management controls the project, which is one component of our management systems, and it is reviewed in annual audits.
